Salary Table Guide for Domestic Workers for 2023.
The minimum wage for a domestic worker.
Royal Decree 1620/2011 establishes in its Article 8 that a domestic worker should receive at least the Minimum Interprofessional Salary when working full time, with full-time defined as 40 hours per week, and in the case of working fewer hours, the proportional part.
In 2023, the Minimum Interprofessional Salary is 15,120 euros annually, which implies that the monthly salary for full-time employment will be:
- Monthly with 14 paychecks: €1,080.
- Monthly with 12 paychecks, extra payments included
However, this minimum wage can always be improved through an individual agreement. Meaning, this is the minimum wage that must be paid, but it does not prevent a higher salary from being paid.
The minimum wage must always be received in its entirety, and even if other benefits such as food or lodging are provided, an amount lower than the minimum wage cannot be received.
Hourly wage table and employer costs for 2023.
As we mentioned earlier, the worker can receive the salary in 12 or 14 paychecks. For this reason, we will differentiate the tables in these cases.
Workweeks of fewer than 40 hours per week have been calculated proportionally to the Minimum Wage.
Furthermore, we differentiate between GROSS, NET, and CONTRIBUTION BASE:
- In English: GROSS – The salary stated on the worker’s payroll without deducting the corresponding social security contributions. This is the important salary for income tax (IRPF) and severance pay calculations.
- NET – The salary that the worker receives in the bank or in cash after deducting the portion that corresponds to Social Security. In other words, the amount that the worker actually receives in the bank (or in cash).
- CONTRIBUTION BASE – The contribution base determines the social security contributions of the worker. It is related to the salary but does not match exactly in this special regime; it is paid in brackets, as we will detail later. This is the base used as a reference for paying temporary disability, unemployment, retirement, maternity benefits, etc.
- It’s important to remember that in this special employment relationship, nothing is withheld for tax purposes, meaning no deductions are made for income tax (IRPF).
