Management of holidays with domestic workers.

Christmas is almost here, and many clients are inquiring about the holiday schedules for domestic workers during festive periods such as Christmas, long weekends, and Holy Week.
It is crucial that domestic workers, whether childcare providers, elderly caregivers, live-in or live-out, and domestic couples, get to enjoy their holidays.

Significant dates like Christmas are a time when everyone likes to spend it with family and friends.

Therefore, L’Atelier10, your domestic services agency in Madrid (with support throughout Spain), always recommends, whenever possible, that domestic workers take advantage of these holidays, especially on special occasions such as the night of December 24th, December 25th, and January 1st.
Payment or compensation for a domestic worker on a holiday:
As mentioned, domestic workers are entitled to 14 holidays per year.

If there is a need for them to work on any of these holidays, an agreement can be reached with the domestic worker if they are interested in working. The agreement may include a monetary amount to compensate for that holiday, or alternatively, compensation with a day off that is not a holiday.

For special holidays such as Christmas and New Year’s, the monetary compensation should be higher than what is paid for a regular holiday.

Estimated payments for holidays:

  • Each holiday: 60€ -80€
  • Saturday afternoon: 40 €
  • Very significant holiday ( Christmas/New Year): 100 € / día.
  • Weekend saturday and sunday 120 €
  • Weekend (friday afternoon, saturday and sunday): 150 €

When a holiday starts and ends for a domestic worker:
A holiday lasts for 24 hours, and this is the period of enjoyment a domestic worker should have on a holiday. For example, on December 6th, you can agree with the live-in domestic worker to leave on the 5th at 9:00 PM and return on the 6th at 9:00 PM or on the 7th in the early morning. Alternatively, they could leave on the 6th at 9:00 AM and return on the 6th at 9:00 PM or on the 7th in the early morning.
The live-in domestic worker can decide where to reside during the holiday; she is not obligated to stay at the employer’s residence.
