Many of you ask us what to do about the uniform for domestic workers.
We always recommend that they wear it during their working hours at home.

This is not only for the benefit of the employers, as there are also advantages for the staff.

Normally, domestic workers prefer to wear a uniform while they are working, although in some cases, for public places like supermarkets, restaurants, parks, etc., it is preferable to give them the option to choose whether they want to wear the uniform or their own clothes. These are various occasions outside the home, such as when they help the employer with shopping, pick up or drop off the children from school, go for walks with them, or accompany the family to a restaurant. In these cases, at L’Atelier10, a domestic services agency in Madrid, we always recommend consulting the domestic worker about their preferences regarding the use of the uniform.”

Advantages of Using Uniforms for Domestic Workers in Madrid

The use of uniforms provides comfort and mobility, and when performing any work in the home, it is essential to dress appropriately.

Domestic workers who wear work uniforms are generally more comfortable than with their own clothes. At the same time, it protects their clothing from wear and stains that may occur during the workday. Both cleaning products and stains while cooking can damage their clothing if it is not replaced with the uniform. However, the uniform is designed to be washed daily.

Employers generally prefer that the clothing and footwear used at home be reserved exclusively for work, without wearing it outside when the domestic worker commutes to their place of employment.
Domestic workers who wear uniforms present a professional image.
When it comes to purchasing the uniform, cardigans, and footwear, it is the responsibility of the employer to provide them.

At L’Atelier10, we always recommend a minimum of 3 uniforms so they can be changed daily, as well as two pairs of shoes for indoor use and one for outings if they are also uniformed.

The domestic worker is responsible for caring for the uniform and keeping it in good condition.

At L’Atelier10, we can confirm that the use of uniforms by domestic workers is comfortable, hygienic, and prevents damage to the worker’s clothing.”

Types of uniforms

It is advisable to know the domestic worker’s preferences regarding the type of uniform so that they feel comfortable.

The uniform used for cleaning is not the same as the one used for serving meals or caring for children or the elderly.

The vast majority of domestic workers prefer uniforms with pants, and this is due to the comfort it provides when performing their tasks, especially when they need to climb a ladder or bend down.

You can also have a daily uniform and opt for a special uniform reserved for specific occasions (meal or dinner service with guests, parties, etc.).

The daily uniform usually consists of a smock and pants with an elastic waistband, similar to a healthcare uniform, available in white as well as other colors (pink, blue, green, etc.). This is one of the most economical and comfortable options.

For childcare, we often recommend white, but there are endless possibilities.

The uniform for more special occasions is typically a dress, which you can also see various options for on our website.

The uniform should be completed with appropriate footwear. You can choose white canvas sneakers with rubber soles, flat or with a small wedge. This is the most economical option. Another option is footwear similar to what nurses wear, which provides greater comfort and support.
